KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Men's rugby team had their first road test of the season as they traveled to Kutztown, Pa. to face No. 5 Kutztown University. The Panthers came out face by taking an early 3-0 lead and then jumping out to a 15-5 lead. However, the Golden Bears of Kutztown would end the game on a 40-0 run to beat the Panthers 45-15. Davenport will switch gears to 7s competition as they travel to South Bend, Ind. to play in Notre Dame's 7's tournament where they will play two matches.
The game started out well for the Panthers as
Jean Pierre Eloff opened the scoring for Davenport with a penalty kick to give the Panthers an early 3-0 lead. But Kutztown would come right back to put a try on the board to take a 5-3 lead as the conversion was missed.
Michael Houston would come back to score a try for the Panthers and Eloff added a point as he was good on the conversion attempt to grab 10-5 advantage.
Brady Gent would then increase the Panther lead to 15-5 with a try.
The Golden Bears then came back and answered with two back-to-back tries of their own to take a 19-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Kutztown continued where the left off at the end of the second half. They would put away four more tries in the second half to take a 45-15 lead. Their defense would not let up either, as they would hold the Panthers scoreless throughout the half.
The Panthers will be in 7s action next weekend when they head to South Bend, Ind. They will play two games in the tournament. The next 15s match for Davenport will be on Friday, October 18 back in South Bend to play against Notre Dame.
Post-Game Notes
The Panthers drop to 1-1 on the season… Eloff, Houston, and Gent split the scoring evenly amongst themselves as they each had five points.
