Scouting Marygrove – 0-4, 0-0 WHAC – Head coach Craig Covington (1st Year)
Marygrove College is under the direction of first year head coach Craig Covington who took over after former coach Dave Sichterman moved on to become the AD at Olivet College (NCAA D3). So far the season has been a struggle for Covington and his Mustangs as they have yet to find the win column through their first four games. MC most recently was on the wrong end of a 110-93 decision to Purdue-North Central and have also fallen to Findlay, Purdue-Calumet and Roosevelt University. Leading the Mustangs in scoring is Diante Taylor who is averaging 15.8 points per night while Manny Washington is pulling down 7.0 rebounds per game. MC will continue their schedule on Wednesday when they host No. 17 Madonna University.
WHAC Opening Success
Davenport has been competing in the WHAC since the 2005-06 season and owns a record of 5-3 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference openers including a 5-0 mark under head coach Burt Paddock. The game against Marygrove marks the second straight year DU starts conference play against the Mustangs. Over their first eight seasons in the conference, DU has seen five different opponents to start league action. Under Paddock, DU has defeated Marygrove, UM-Dearborn (3 times) and Concordia.
Stranglehold on the WHAC
Since becoming the head coach of the Davenport Men's Basketball program before the 2008-09 season, head coach Burt Paddock has guided his team to a pair of WHAC titles and three second place finishes. His record against WHAC teams during that time is 68-16 during the regular season and 77-19 if you include WHAC Tournament games and non-conference games. Paddock has a winning record against every school within the conference including a 4-0 mark against Marygrove, which are the only four wins for the program over the Mustangs. The next best record over the 5 years is 62-22 in the regular season by Cornerstone followed by Indiana Tech at 51-33.
