DETROIT, Mich. – Davenport prepped for an upcoming matchup with cross-town rival Cornerstone with a convincing 102-46 win on Saturday over host Marygrove College. The Panthers, who are now 5-0 on the season, opened WHAC play with a win for the sixth straight season as Dominez Burnett poured in a career high 30 points. The No. 10 ranked Panthers quickly turn their attention to the Golden Eagles on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Mol Arena.
Six different players reached double-figures for head coach Burt Paddock on Saturday afternoon but it was more about the defense and rebounding that the staff was happy with as they opened defense of their third straight league crown with a 56 point win. DU out-rebounded the Mustangs 50-26 while holding the home team to just 26.6% from the field. Burnett's new career high of 30 points came on 10-12 shooting from the field while the sophomore with 9-9 from the foul line.
Davenport dominated in every facet of the game after scoring the first four points of the game and they never looked back leading 50-23 at halftime and then pouring in 52 more in the second half. Also finishing in double-figures for the Panthers were Nick Gamble (16), JaVontae Ford (14), John McCloud (12), Mike Betcher (11) and DeArmond Davis (10).
Mike Betcher also finished with a new season/career high 10 rebounds to post his first double-double of his time in a DU uniform while three different Panthers had four assists, Gamble, Burnett and Braima Hai.
Leading the Mustangs was Diante Taylor who posted 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the loss. The Mustangs committed 18 turnovers and were a measly 3-25 (12.0%) from behind the arc.
Davenport will remain on the road on Wednesday when they head up the Beltline to rival Cornerstone for an 8 p.m. contest with the Golden Eagles.
Post-Game Quotes – Head coach Burt Paddock
On team's focus in WHAC Opener – "The kids did a terrific job focusing on the things we made important to get better at: rebounding and defense. It has been our staple for a long time and tonight was a great sign.To give up just 46 points in a conference road game was fantastic."
On Advantage on the Glass – "We have discussed the importance on getting everyone involved on the boards tonight and we had 10 guys with at least three rebounds and it allowed us to get out in transition and we can be pretty good when we get going end to end."
