GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport D1 hockey team looked to rebound from a tough loss to Oakland the previous night in the opening game of the Good Luck DUck series. However, in game two the Golden Grizzlies used the momentum from last night's game and carried over to lead them to a 7-2 win over the Panthers with the goal scores for DU being
Kevin Noble and
Phil Wendecker. Oakland now leads the Good Luck DUck series 2-0 in the best of five series. The Panthers will be in action Thursday, November 21, to start a three game in three-day stretch; the game on Thursday is against Liberty at Patterson Ice Center at 8:30 p.m.
Oakland came out fast to start the game holding pressure in the Panther zone and the Grizzlies scored the first goal of the game just five minutes in the game to take the early lead 1-0. The Grizzlies kept the pressure on
Matt Kaludis scoring two more goals in the first half of the period to take the 3-0 lead.
With 5:24 left in the first period Oakland added was able to beat
Phil Graveline to increase the lead. In final minute of play in the first period the Grizzlies and Panthers traded goals, as Oakland put one in to go up 5-0, but
Kevin Noble put the puck in the net to bring the Oakland lead to four heading into the first intermission.
In the second period DU looked come out quick and right the ship, but Oakland was able to get on the board again as they scored just four minutes into the period to increase the lead to five goals. Just like the previous game both teams got a lot of special teams work with multiple penalties in the period. The Grizzlies added another goal with less five minutes left in the period to take a 7-1 lead into the locker room.
In the third the Panthers struck early as
Phil Wendecker was able to beat the Golden Grizzly goaltender less the a minute into the period to cut the lead down to five. The Grizzlies held on to keep the score at 7-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the best of five series for the Good Luck DUck.
The Panthers will host Liberty on Thursday to start a three game in three days stretch, the game is part of the Blue-Gray Cup, but the Flames swept the Panthers in Virginia to claim the cup. The puck drop for the game against Liberty on Thursday is at 8:30 p.m. at Patterson Ice Center.
