YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Davenport D1 hockey team continued to roll on Saturday to up their win streak to three games, which is a season high. After beating Eastern Michigan on Friday both teams were back at Saturday and DU was able to get another win as they beat the Eagles 5-1.
Matt Ogden was able to find the back of the net twice while
Robert Kleiman tallied three assists in the game, and the penalty kill unit went seven-for-seven on the night. DU is now 10-6-0-1 and they will have key GLCHL matchup on Tuesday, November 26 as they travel to Adrian, Mich. to take on conference leader Adrian College at 7 p.m. at Arrington Ice Arena.
DU got behind early as the Eagles were able to get a puck past
Matt Kaludis 8:42 into the game, but the Panthers came back as
Andrew Frank scored with five minutes left in the period to tie the game at one. Two minutes later
Phil Wendecker was able to put Davenport on top with a goal to give DU a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission. The Panthers were able to sustain pressure on the Eastern Michigan goaltender as they peppered him with 23 shots in the period.
In the second period, DU was able to get more special teams work in as they killed off four Eagle power plays to hang onto the lead. Seven minutes into the period
Bo Jacobs was able to increase the Panther lead to two goals off a feed from
Robert Kleiman. With eight minutes left in the period
Matt Ogden scored his first goal of the night off a pass from freshman
Aaron Beally to give DU a 4-1 lead after two periods.
The Panthers looked to put the Eagles away in third with some insurance, and Ogden did just that as he found the net for the second time to give Davenport a 5-1 lead as
Luke McCarthy and
Bo Jacobs picked up the assists on the goal. The penalty kill unit for head coach
Phil Sweeney's squad was able to kill off some more Eagle power plays to hold on the lead and take the 5-1 victory.
The Panthers will have a short time to recuperate from three games in three days as they conclude a four games in six day stretch on Tuesday as they travel to Arrington Ice Arena in Adrian, Mich. to take on No. 7 Adrian at 7 p.m., before the team gets a short break for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Post-Game Notes
Matt Kaludis pick up the win to move his record to 4-2 on the year and the team is now 10-6-0-1 on the year and 7-4-0-1 in the GLCHL.
Robert Kleiman improves on his team lead in points and assists with the three assists tonight. The Panthers penalty kill unit was a perfect 7-for-7 tonight, just one night after the power play was 3-for-3, and they also added a power play goal in the game.
