KENT, Ohio – The Davenport D1 hockey team looked to rebound after a tough game last night were they dropped the opening game of the series to Kent State 4-2. DU came out strong as they took game two 8-0, which was highlighted by hat trick by Mason Bohlinger and a shut out by Matt Kaludis. John Brooks, Phil Wendecker, Travis White, Luke McCarthy, Tyler Layle were the other Panthers to find the back of the net. DU will be back on the ice next Friday as they play Oakland at 8:20 p.m. in Rochester, Mich. to open up the Good Luck DUck Series.

The Panther looked to come out fast and right the ship early, and they were able to hold the puck in the Kent State zone but they could break the ice until there was nine minutes left in the period when Luke McCarthy found the puck in the slot and was able to beat the Golden Flash net minder. After that goal DU started to pour it on as Mason Bohlinger notched his first goal of the game, and Tyler Layle was able to add on to give DU a 3-0 lead.

To close out the period Bohlinger added another goal to give the Panthers the 4-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Davenport carried the momentum into the second period as Travis White had a break for the near blue line and was able to blast puck past the Kent State goalie low stick side to increase the lead to five. Bohlinger capped of his hat trick four minutes later to take the 6-0 lead.

In game that was riddled with penalties, Matt Kaludis and the penalty kill unit came up big to keep the game at 6-0. Closing out the scoring in the second period was John Brooks as he was able to find the back of the net to give DU a 7-0 lead heading into the third period.

The physicality from the first two periods carried over into the third as the intensity picked up, and the scoring started with nine minutes left in the game as Phil Wendecker was able to snipe a shot from the point to increase the Panther lead. Kaludis closed out the game with a shutout to secure the 8-0 victory over the Golden Flashes.

After the game head coach Phil Sweeney talked about the difference he seen in his team tonight, "It was just a better overall game, some of our guys got going early. Mason had a hat trick tonight. It is crucial to the momentum of a game, and our power play was clicking tonight. We had a decent talk before the game about the direction we need to take this team and we have skill on the team, guys just have to use their skills. They used their skill tonight and we got the win."
