CHICAGO, Ill. – A 13-0 run to end the first half and a 12-4 spurt early in the second half was just enough for the No. 9 ranked men's basketball team to fend off No. 25 Lourdes 54-49 to finish the weekend 2-1 overall. Davenport is now 12-3 on the season as they will play their final 15 games in conference beginning Saturday, January 4 at Aquinas College.
Only three players finished in double-figures for Davenport as they were led by 12 points from
Kevin Rich while
JaVontae Ford and
Nick Gamble each had 11 as they helped DU finish in fifth place in the Midwest Tournament hosted by Saint Xavier (Ill.).
Offense was far from the mindset of both teams in the early going as only eight total points were scored through the first 4:49 until the Gray Wolves broke almost a three minute stretch without a point and they would score six in a row to lead 10-4. After going scoreless for 7:33 of game clock, DU's
Nick Gamble got the Panther offense going again with a 3-pointer and DU would score the next eight points overall to lead 12-8.
The lead changed hands twice more during the opening half and after DU took a 16-14 lead, they would add on nine more including a late three-pointer from
Dominez Burnett to take a 25-14 edge into the break.
The offense continued to pile it on early in the second half and after an early bucket from the Gray Wolves, Davenport ran off 12 of the next 16 points to take a commanding 37-20 lead. Sparking the run was eight points from freshman
Kevin Rich including a banked in three-pointer.
But just as they did in the first half, the offense went away from DU this time for almost a four minute stretch that saw the Gray Wolves cut the lead to just four points. From that point on, the two teams traded baskets with LU never getting any closer than four with DU coming out on top 58-49.
The Panthers ended up shooting 40.8% (20-49) from the floor while holding the Gray Wolves to 41.8% and DU forced Lourdes into 17 turnovers while committing only 13 themselves. Stat leaders for the Panthers were
DeArmond Davis with eight rebounds,
Nick Gamble with five assists and
Brendan Cooper with three steals.
Post-Game Notes
Davenport has held Lourdes to 63 points or below in all nine of their matchups since LU started basketball in 2011-12… DU improves to 2-1 against NAIA Top-25 teams this season…
Dominez Burnett was named to the All-Tournament Team
