GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport D1 hockey team looked for revenge and a split with Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday night. The Panthers did just that as they rolled past the Wolverines by a score of 10-0.
Matt Ogden tallied two goals in the second period and
Andrew Frank chipped in with two assists. The line of
Josh Munford,
Chris Ballatore and
Dustin Wischmeyer were rolling as they all tallied goals and were on the ice for four of the first five goals in the game. The Panther will be back in action next weekend as they play local Division 2 rival Grand Valley State on Friday and Saturday.
The Panthers came out fast to open the game as
Bo Jacobs started the scoring for Davenport as he beat the Michigan-Dearborn goaltender to take the early 1-0 lead. The same line came right back less than a minute later a
Dustin Wischmeyer tallied a goal to give the Panthers a two-goal lead. The line of Wischmeyer,
Josh Munford and
Chris Ballatore kept buzzing as
Josh Munford increased the Panther lead to three.
John Brooks continued the torrid start for Davenport as the puck was able to find the back of the net through any bodies as DU tallied a power play goal. With one second left
Chris Ballatore got his goal, as he and his two other line mates (Wischmeyer and Munford), all put goals on the board in the first period to give DU a 5-0 lead after the first period.
The Panthers continued to put the pressure on in the second period as
Matt Ogden scored his first goal of the game on another Davenport power play.
Mason Bohlinger picked up a goal in the second period as DU continued to roll to a 7-0 lead. Ogden scored his second goal of the period and the game to give Davenport a 8-0 lead after the second period.
In the third period DU kept the pressure on Wolverines as they dominated possession, but they could not find the back of the net. The Wolverines had a few chances early in the period but
Matt Kaludis came up big when he had to, to keep the Wolverines off the board.
DU continued to score as Wischmeyer tallied his second goal of the game to increase the Panther lead.
Luke McCarthy closed out the scoring for the Panthers as he rifled the puck from just in front of the blue line as the Panthers won the game 10-0.
After the game head coach
Phil Sweeney talked about his teams bounce back performance, "Guys are more mentality focused tonight, you could tell last night guys were not mentality ready and tonight we were. We came out on fire and played 60 great minutes of hockey." Sweeney continued to talk about closing out the semester next weekend against Grand Valley, "Guys know what it takes to win, you have to be mentally ready every night and you can not just come in half the time and be ready to go. We have to be mentally ready to play two tough games against a crosstown rival."
The Panthers will be back in action next weekend as the play local rival Grand Valley State next weekend on Friday and Saturday to close out the semester. Game one is one Friday in Allendale, Mich. at 9 p.m., and game two is on Saturday at Patterson Ice Center at 5:30 p.m.
Post-Game Notes
The Panthers outshot the Wolverines 56-21 and was able to score in double digits for the first time this season.
Matt Kaludis picked up his second shutout of the season and is now 5-2 on the season and the Panthers are 12-7-0-1 on the season.
