GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After suffering a tough conference loss at Arkansas State last week, Davenport got back into the win column with a 79-5 victory over Michigan at DU Turf Field on a cold Friday evening.
Without some of their key starters, the Panthers were still able to strike early. DU was noticeably more physical than Michigan and played tough defense. Meanwhile, Michigan had a hard time getting past the midline.
Davenport established dominance at the start of the first half when
Willy Urena scored 4:30 into the match. The Panthers got six more tries from
Anthony Welmers,
Reece Czarnecki,
Gabe Sochanek,
Brandon Bokhart and Adam Reis before DU headed into the locker room with a 39-0 lead over the Wolverines.
The second half was much of the same for Davenport as they scored six more tries and added two penalty kicks from
Brady Gent. Sochanek,
Rory Dill,
Dominique Bailey, Czarnecki,
Nick Glocke and
Kevin Lydon each scored on behalf of the Panthers.
Brady Gent took on the kicking duties for sidelined JP Eloff. He went 4-of-12 on conversions and 2-of-3 on penalty kicks for a total of 14 points. Sochanek also had an excellent showing, scoring three tries and totaling 15 points.
Davenport took the lead early and never looked back. Their physical nature was prevalent and Michigan had no answers for their stiff defense.
The Panthers look to make it two in a row when the face Notre Dame tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in South Bend, Ind.
