GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport faced off against #1 ranked Arkansas State on Saturday at the DU Turf Field. With the score 20-13 with 16:40 to go in the first half, the Red Wolves scored 19 unanswered points to end the half with a 39-13 lead. The score never became close after that surge as the Red Wolves won, 60-27. The loss marks the first at home for Davenport in their four year program history. The Panthers are back in action next week Saturday at home against Life University. Life defeated DU earlier in the season in Georgia, 48-0.

The first twenty minutes of the game, Davenport held their own against the Red Wolves. Arkansas State struck early, scoring 14 points in the first seven minutes of the game. But two penalty conversions and a try by JP Eloff cut the ASU lead to just one with 18:40 to go in the first half.

The last half of the first half was all Arkansas State. They ended the half with three different tries and two penalty kicks. They were able to make 2-of-3 conversions as well. The score going into halftime was a lopsided, 39-13 in favor of Arkansas State.

In the beginning of the second half, ASU was able to convert two more tries to seemingly put the game out of reach for the Panthers.

Coach Quote

Head Coach, Kruger Van Biljon:

“We gave them a scare last time when we went down there (ASU), obviously they came back and proved why they are the number one team in the country”

“They ran in three quick tries, and that just put us on our back foot all game. It's hard to come back from that perspective.”

“If you look at the second half, we came back with scoring two good tries at the end. So, we have the fighting power and the “fighting until the end” characteristic that we want to install in the guys, and that's good but against a team like Arkansas State, you need to be alert at all times. You can't let them sneak through silly gaps and score on stupid mistakes that you make.”

Post-Game Notes

The loss to Arkansas State puts them at 3-3 overall on the year and 0-3 in the Mid-South Division. The loss also marks the first in the history of the four year program at home.
