MARION, Ind. – Another top-25 foe fell victim to the Davenport Volleyball team on Friday as the Panthers rallied from two sets to one down to claim a 3-2 win over the host and No. 17 ranked Wildcats of Indiana Wesleyan. Unfortunately, the night ended with a tough 3-0 defeat at the hands of Texas Wesleyan as DU will now direct their attention to Taylor University and Marian University on Saturday.
The first match of the night pitted DU against yet another NAIA Top-25 foe as host Indiana Wesleyan came into the day ranked 17th. The Wildcats jumped all over DU in the opening set as they won 25-16 but the Panthers rallied to even the match with a 25-19 win in the second. The two teams would then trade the next two sets which sent it to a fifth and deciding set.
After some early back and forth action in the decider, DU scored nine of the final 12 points to win going away 15-11. Hannah Stone continued her dominating play at the net as the junior posted a team high 15 kills while hitting at a .458 clip. Marcey DeHaan (14) and Olivia DenHartigh (13) also posted double-digit kills for DU as Amber Getty posted a season high 54 assists.
Looking to carry the momentum with them from the first to the second match, DU was unable to get anything going against a very tough Texas Wesleyan squad. The Rams (5-1) posted two close victories (25-23 and 25-20) to lead 2-0 and then finished off DU with a 25-18 win in the third.
Marcey DeHaan led another balanced match on offense as she finished with eight kills on just 15 attempts.Nicole Chase chipped in with seven while Hannah Stone added six. Davenport cost themselves dearly behind the service line as they finished with 10 errors.
Davenport, now 3-4 on the season, will stay in Indiana for the second day of the Taylor/Indiana Wesleyan crossover. The Panthers will face host Taylor University at 11 a.m. before taking on Marian at 1:30 p.m.
