GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's rugby team made sure the excitement during Homecoming Week continue Friday night. Jean Pierre Eloff had one try and three penalty goals made for 14 points and three other Davenport men's rugby student-athletes added a try to help the Panthers down Michigan State 29-0 in front of a crowded attendance at DU Turf Field.
 
Mason Baum, Michael Houston and Travis Kamstra each logged in a try for Davenport. Eloff went 0-for-3 on the conversion while Brady Gent missed his only attempted on the evening.
 
Davenport broke the ice about five minutes into the game when Michigan State was caught with a penalty deep into its own zone. Eloff made a direct kick from about 10 yards that would cross between the posts to take a 3-0 lead. Eloff would give the Panthers a 6-0 with another charity kick with approximately 30 minutes left. His second kick was about 25 yards out.
 
The Panthers wouldn't record their first try until the midpoint of the first half. Roman Mares picked up the ball from the ground and carried it near the end line. Before he was tacked near the endline, Mares quickly passed to Houston who finished the carry for the try. Houston would carry the ball again from the kick. He carried the ball all the way to the endline before his handoff to Eloff completed the try. The Panthers would another try by Baum before heading into halftime with a 21-0 lead.

While the Panthers were in intermission, the cheer team received their national championship rings from University president Richard Pappas and director of athletics Paul Lowden.
 
Davenport will hop on the bus to take on Kutztown University in Pennsylvania Oct. 5. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
