Site: Marion, Ind. (IWU Soccer Field)
Score: No. 9 Rio Grande 2, Davenport 1 (2OT)
Records: DU (3-1-0), RIO (3-0-0)
Next DU event: Saturday, Sep. 7 – at #RV Indiana Wesleyan – 7 p.m.
MARION, Ind. – For two-thirds of regulation time, it looked as if the Davenport Men's Soccer team was going to pull off a big upset of the ninth ranked team in the country, but Rio Grande (Ohio) had other plans as they scored the equalizer with just less than 20 minutes in regulation and then followed with a golden goal in the second overtime to pull out a 2-1 win over the Panthers. The loss is the first of the year for DU and third win in as many matches for the Red Storm as the Panthers will now turn their attention to the host for the weekend tournament, Indiana Wesleyan in a 7 p.m. match on Saturday.
Through three matches thus far in the 2013 season, the men's soccer team had put up some convincingly great offensive numbers with 12 goals and it looked as if that offensive spark would continue on Friday afternoon after Dzenan Catic gave DU an early 1-0 lead just 17 minutes into the match. Omar Mansah was credited with the assist and DU took that 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Early in the second as Rio stepped up their offense to try and get an equalizer, DU keeper Mirza Harambasic was up the challenge with some great saves but the Red Storm finally broke through at the 70:17 mark to knot the score up at 1-1.
Neither team posed much of a threat over the final 19 minutes and the match was sent into overtime and eventually double overtime where Rio posted the game winner with 7:56 remaining. William Paulino scored the golden goal for Rio as they now turn their attention to the No. 1 ranked team in the country, Belhaven, who was upset by the host Wildcats of Indiana Wesleyan 1-0 on Friday night.
Davenport (3-1-0) will look to rebound and they will have to do it quickly as they take on Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Indiana Wesleyan website (www.iwuwildcats.com).
Post-Match Notes
The loss marks the second straight year DU has fallen to the No. 9 ranked team in the country as the Panthers fell 2-0 to Auburn Montgomery in 2012…Dzenan Catic already has more goals this season (4) than what the leader had in 2012 for the Panthers (3)…DU was facing Rio Grande for the first time in school history and will face Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday for only the second time (DU is 1-0 against the Wildcats)
