MARION, Ind. – After almost pulling off an upset of No. 9 Rio Grande on Friday night, the men's soccer team returned to the pitch at Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday and posted an impressive 2-0 shutout of the host Wildcats. Lito Esquivel recorded his first goal in a Panther uniform and Dzenan Catic picked up his fifth of the season as the Panthers took down a team receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 poll and also one who defeated the No. 1 ranked team in the country the night before. DU will return to action on Thursday when they play at No. 3 Lindsey Wilson.
Davenport continued a tough early season schedule on Saturday night, playing at the Wildcats of Indiana Wesleyan and they used a goal in each half to pull off a mild upset of a team receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll. DU had a couple chances early in the opening 45 minutes but a shot off the foot of Dzenan Catic hit the post and then just ten minutes later, a header from Catic ricocheted off of the post to keep the game scoreless.
Just as it looked as if the match would go into the locker room deadlocked at zero, Lito Esquivel took a perfect pass from Jordan Van Oostenbrugge and put it by the IWU keeper for the 1-0 lead for the Panthers.
Looking to put an insurance goal on the board, DU first had to fend off a few great opportunities for the Wildcats but keeper Mirza Harambasic came up with a pair of nice saves to keep IWU off the scoreboard and then his offense broke through on a goal from Dzenan Catic just less than halfway through the second 45. Collin Mohr was credited with his first assist of the season.
The DU defense buckled down over the final 25 minutes to preserve their second shutout of the week and post a big road win. Harambasic finished with four saves in net for the Panthers as DU outshot the Wildcats 12-6 (6-4 on goal)
Davenport will hit the road twice more next week beginning with a match at No. 3 Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.). Game time is set for 8 p.m. EST and will broadcast live along with live stats. The Panthers also play at Bethel (Ind.) on Saturday.
Post-Match Notes
Dzenan Catic now has five goals through his first five collegiate contests…Lito Esquivel became the fifth "newcomer" to record a goal so far for the Panthers…IWU had defeated No. 1 Belhaven 1-0 on Friday night…11 different players have already recorded a point in 2013 after seeing just 15 do it all of last season
