Second-Half Surge Lifts No. 2 Men’s Soccer Over Concordia

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Tyler Fischer scored two goals, Cameron Cavanaugh, Dino Duratovic and Dzenan Catic each added one as Davenport's second-ranked men's soccer team did all the damage in the second half to take a 5-0 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference win over Concordia on the Turf Field Wednesday night. The Panthers victory occurred just a few hours after the NAIA had announced that DU holds the top ranking in the first edition of the Modified Ratings Percentage Index (MRPI).

Davenport (9-1-0, 2-0-0 WHAC) refused to slow down in the second period after outshooting Concordia (2-6-0, 1-1-0 WHAC) 15-1 before intermission. DU went on to finish the night dominating the shooting department 33-5 overall, 14-1 on goal.

Cardinal keeper Michael Erickson and the defensive line held the Panthers attack on check until the 63rd minute. Fischer fired a loose ball from the top right corner of the penalty box directly at Erickson but the netminder couldn't trap the ball as it slipped underneath him and slowly rolled across the goal line.

The goal would ignite a scoring barrage as Cavanagh collected the insurance policy five minutes later. Jacob Love dribbled to the left corner before volleying over to Cavanagh near the right post for the finishing touch.

Fischer's first attempt on a multi-goal night came in the 79th minute. The Grand Rapids native brokeaway from midfield and fired a shot that was deflected by Erickson, but the fellow senior Duratovic trapped the rebound near the end line and arched it over the Cardinals defense for the third goal.

Despite missing a hat trick, Fischer's second goal came in the 84th minute when he struck from the top of the box and beats Erickson on the left side. Catic would complete the score when he blasted his shot directly down the middle in the 86th minute.

The MRPI consists of the team's modified winning percentage, their opponents' winning percentage and the cumulative ratings points from the NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll.  Each of the three values has a weighted percentage calculated in the MRPI. The MRPI modifies the value of home/away/neutral results and adds more value for games against opponents ranked in their respective national poll.

Davenport travels across the state to Detroit where they take on Marygrove Saturday at 4 p.m.
