GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 22nd ranked women's soccer team took on sixth ranked Northwestern Ohio in the regular season finale at home for Davenport on Senior Day.
Mackenzie VanDerWarf scored two goals in the second half to snap the shutout streak for the Racers and propelled the Panthers to a 2-0 upset win. Davenport will close out their regular season schedule next week when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face Concordia on Friday at 4 p.m.
On Senior Day for Davenport, senior forward MacKenzie VanDerWarf stared for the Panthers as she scored two goals in the second half. VanDerWarf had just one goal heading into the matchup against Northwestern Ohio on Saturday afternoon.
After coming away with ties in their last two matches, Davenport had a tough test against Northwestern Ohio. The Racers came into the match shutting out their last 12 opponents and moved up sixth in the NAIA rankings.
After a scoreless first half that seen both sides trying to possess the ball, VanDerWarf was able to end the shutout streak of the Racers after
Leah Hardy played a nice ball to her feet and VanDerWarf was able to sneak it through the goalkeepers legs to put Davenport ahead 1-0 in the 70th minute.
In the 85th minute, senior
Paige Eli held possession of the ball at midfield and chipped the ball just past the Racer defensive line and VanDerWarf picked up the ball just outside the box and she was able to beat the keeper short side for her second goal of the match. The Panthers were able to hold the Racers in the final minutes of game to hold on to the upset victory.
Davenport will close out their regular season schedule next Friday when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face Concordia at 4 p.m.
Post-Match Notes Tara Gessler made five saves in the match and picked up her sixth shutout of the season… Northwestern Ohio had not allowed a goal in 1113:42 coming into the match, and the time extended to 1183:42 into the match today before the Panthers first goal of the match… Davenport also handed Northwestern Ohio their first loss of the season, and the Racers are now 13-1-1 on the year.
