GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's soccer team kept themselves in the hunt for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship after a successful penalty kick by Dzenan Catic right before halftime lifted the No. 14 Panthers to a 1-0 upset win over No. 11 Northwestern Ohio on a cold and cloudy Wednesday afternoon on the Turf Field.
With one match remaining on the regular-season, DU (14-3-0, 7-2-0 WHAC) will travel to Lawrence Tech Saturday at 4 p.m. looking to keep the pressure on the first-place Racers (12-3-1, 8-1-0 WHAC). Northwestern Ohio will head home and host in Marygrove Saturday.
The Racers were in complete control right from the start of the match, tallying at least 10 shots near the halfway mark and taking five corner kicks. Northwestern Ohio made a defensive mistake by making a bad tackle in their box to force a penalty kick with 24 seconds left in the first half. Catic, who has taken penalty kicks in the past, fired to left side to fool Racer keeper Liam Davies for the lone goal.
Although the Racers outshot the Panthers 10-7 overall, 7-5 in the second half, Davenport had played better control with the ball and put pressure on Northwestern Ohio's defense.
Davenport keeper
Aaron Orban made three saves on the afternoon to preserve his fourth shutout of the season.
Post-Match NotesPrior to kicking off the match, Davenport honor the five members of its senior class (
