Balanced Attack Boosts No. 16 D1 Hockey over No. 24 John Carroll

Box Score UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – After capturing their first win of the season on Friday; the D1 hockey team was able to complete the weekend sweep against John Carroll with a 7-0 win. Luke McCarthy and Jordan Simmonds led the way for the Panthers with two goals each. DU will have next weekend off before they travel out to Lynchburg, Va. to face Liberty on Friday, October 17 at 7 p.m.
 
Davenport came out firing in the first period as they scored early and often. Chris Eckler got the scoring started for the Panthers and Jordan Simmonds followed shortly after to give DU an early 2-0 lead. After scoring a hat trick the night before Luke McCarthy continued to have the hot stick as he beat the Blue Steak goaltender on a two-on-one rush to increase the DU lead to three goals.
 
The Panthers found themselves on a five-on-three man advantage, and Mason Bohlinger tallied his first goal of the season to give DU a 4-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
 
In the second period, Davenport did not let up on offense as Travis White fired a puck from the slot a put it in the back of the net to boost the Panther lead to five goals. After a lot of special teams action in the second period, neither team was able score the rest of the period and Davenport took a 5-0 lead into the locker room.
 
DU opened up the final stanza the same way they started the first two as they scored early goals, as McCarthy and Simmonds both scored their second goals of the game. Clayton Brown got his first start in net this season and picked up his first win and shutout in a Davenport uniform.
 
After the game head coach Phil Sweeney talked about his team completing the sweep at John Carroll, "We are happy to come to Ohio and get the sweep. We played very fast and extremely physical, and put together a lot of big hits to open up scoring chances. We have eight days of practice to get ready for Liberty in two weeks. We will enjoy the wins and then get back to prepare to win back the Blue-Gray Cup."
 
The Panthers will have next weekend off before they open up the Blue-Gray Cup in Lynchburg, Va. against Liberty on Friday, October 17 at 7 p.m.
 
Post-Game Notes
 
Davenport moves to 2-1-0-1 on the year and recorded their first shut out of the season. Clayton Brown made his debut in net for the Panthers and picked up his first win at Davenport.
