Cougar Classic in Indiana on Tap for No. 4 Men’s Basketball this Weekend

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's basketball team will close out their opening week of the season with two more games at the Cougar Classic hosted by St. Francis (Ind.) in Fort Wayne, Ind. Davenport is heading into the weekend after opening the season with an 84-73 win over Grace Bible. The Panthers will start the Cougar Classic as they play NAIA DI program St. Catharine (Ky.) on Friday at 6 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Ind.

A Quick Look at St. Catharine (Ky.) – 0-2 – Head Coach Matthew Taylor
St. Catharine, a NAIA Division I program, comes into the weekend with a 0-2 record as they dropped their first two games of the season to Indiana-Southeast and Bryan (Tenn.) The Patriots are averaging 92.5 points per game in the early going of the season. Leading the team in scoring in the first two games is senior guard, Ben Vozzola, who is averaging 25 points a game thus far. Vozzola is also the leading rebounder for the squad.  
 
A Quick Look at St. Francis (Ind.) – 3-0 – Head Coach Chad LaCross
The Cougars opened the season ranked 15th in the NAIA Division II Preseason polls. St. Francis has started the year with a 3-0 record, which included a 79-59 win over WHAC foe Indiana Tech. The Cougars currently lead NAIA DII in field goal percentage as the shot 62.4 percent through the first three games. Sophomore guard Kegan Comer leads the team in scoring with 18.67 points a game.
 
A Quick Look at Webber International – 0-1 – Head Coach John Shoffner
Webber International started the season with a home loss against Florida College, 81-75. In the Warriors first game of the season, they shot 40.6 percent from the field and shot 40.9 percent from behind the arc. Leading the team in scoring is senior guard, Raymond Durant. Durant shot 70.0 percent from the field in the game for a team high 22 points.
 
Cougar Classic Overview
Davenport will open the Cougar Classic against NAIA DI opponent St. Catharine. The Panthers and Patriots have never met prior to the matchup on Friday evening. Last season, St. Francis and Webber International faced off in mid-December down in Babson Park, Fla., and the Cougars won the 71-67 on the road. The winners of each game will play on Saturday afternoon and the losers of each game will also play on Saturday afternoon with the times still to be determined.
