GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's basketball team took on former Davenport assistant coach Taylor Langley and Michigan-Dearborn in the Panthers final home game in 2014.
Dominez Burnett led the way for Davenport with 28 points and eight rebounds. Davenport is now 10-2 overall on the season and is 6-1 in the WHAC. The Panthers will now head to Chicago, Ill., for the Saint Xavier Midwest Classic where they will start the tournament on Sunday, December 21st against host Saint Xavier (Ill.).
Dominez Burnett led the charge for the Panthers with 28 points in 29 minutes of play and also led the team with eight rebounds. The Panthers had three other players in double figures as
Jason Jordan set a new career-high with 13 points, while
Thomas Drew had 11 points and
Kevin Rich chipped in with ten points.
Davenport took an early five point in lead in the game and they never looked back, as Michigan-Dearborn never led in the game. Davenport tried to pull away early in the game, but the Wolverines kept the Panthers within their sights as DU never led by more than nine point until the Panthers took a ten point lead with 1:44 left in the half. After a pair of free throws by Burnett, Davenport took a 37-26 lead into the half.
The Panthers came out firing in the second half as they shot 60.9 percent from the field in the half and finished the game shooting an even 50 percent from the field. Davenport went 6-for-8 from behind the arc, and pulled away from Michigan-Dearborn in the second half as they took a 56-35 lead with 11:47 left in second half after a three from Jordan.
Wes Webbert made a free throw to close out the game and give the Panthers their largest lead of the game at 29 points in the 81-52 win for the Panthers.
After Concordia upset Cornerstone in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Saturday night, Davenport and Concordia are tied atop the WHAC standings at 6-1, while Cornerstone, Lourdes and Northwestern Ohio are all one game behind first place with a 5-2 WHAC record.
Davenport will now travel to Chicago, Ill., for the Saint Xavier Midwest Classic, starting on Sunday, December 21st. The first two games of the classic for Davenport will be against No. 15 Saint Xavier (Ill.) and No. 11 Saint Ambrose (Iowa).
Post-Game NotesJason Jordan went 5-for-7 from the field as was 4-for-6 from behind the arc to set a new career-high with 14 points against the Wolverines… Davenport had a season-high with 14 steals in the game and forced 18 turnovers, which led to 32 points for the Panthers… Points in the paint was even as each team tallied 30 points inside the lane.
