GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After being off from competition for the last seven days the Davenport men's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday night when the face Siena Heights. In the first NAIA poll of the regular season Davenport moved up from fourth into a tie for third with College of Idaho. Davenport is 8-1 overall and is 4-0 in WHAC play, and Siena Heights in tied for second in the WHAC with a 3-1 record and is 5-4 overall. Tipoff between the Panthers and Saints is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday and
Rick Berkey will have the call on the DAN.
A Quick Look at Siena Heights – 5-4, 3-1 WHAC – Head Coach Joe PechotaSiena Heights enters the week with an overall record of 5-4 and is in a second place tie in the WHAC with a 3-1 record. The Saints score an average of 73.8 points per game and shoots 44.2 percent from the field and is shooting 30.1 percent from behind the arc. Christian Covile leads the team in scoring averaging 16.2 points per game and George Goodman is the only other Saint averaging double figures this season scoring 11.9 points per game. Jerrell Martin leads the team in total blocks and blocks per game with 21 and 2.3. Martin also ranks eighth in country in both total blocks and blocks per game. Siena Heights also ranks 17th in the country in turnover margin with 4.8.
Panthers vs. SaintsIn the all-time series between Davenport and Siena Heights, the Panthers lead the all-time the series 14-8. The Saints won the first six matchups between the two teams, and won eight of the first ten meetings between Davenport and Siena Heights. Since coach Paddock took over the program for Davenport, the Panthers have won 12 of 13 meeting between the two teams and have one the last 12 meetings. Davenport and Siena Heights have only met once in the postseason on February 22, 2012 in the WHAC Quarterfinals with the Panthers winning the game 103-65.
The Last Time They MetThe last meeting between Davenport and Siena Heights was to close out the regular season last year on February 22nd on Senior Day. Davenport was able to outscore the Siena Heights by 20 points in the first half en route to an 83-38 win. On Senior Day, then senior,
JaVontae Ford led the Panthers with 25 points in the game and he capped off his double-double with ten rebounds.
Dominez Burnett had 15 points in the game and
Nick Gamble rounded out the Panther scorers in double figures with ten points. Davenport shot an even 50 percent from the field and was also 50 percent from behind the arc. The Panther defense held the Saints 33.3 percent from field and 26.3 percent from three point range.
