No. 3 Men’s Basketball Travels Down Beltline to Face No. 14 Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After beating Siena Heights on Wednesday night, the third ranked Davenport men's basketball team will renew the Beltline rivalry on Saturday afternoon as they travel down the Beltline to face 14th ranked Cornerstone. Last season, Cornerstone was able to win two of the three games against Davenport, including the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship game, where the Golden Eagles won 73-66. The Beltline rivalry continues on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. on the Cornerstone Campus at the Mol Arena.

A Quick Look at Cornerstone
Cornerstone enters the weekend with an 8-3 overall record and is a three way tie for second in the WHAC with a 4-1 record. This season the Golden Eagles average 78.8 points per game as they out score their opponents by an average of nine points per game. Kyle Steigenga, who was named the WHAC Player of the Week twice this season, leads the team in scoring with 19.1 points per game. Cornerstone has used a balanced offensive scoring attack with four players averaging double figures in points. As a team the Golden Eagles shoot 47.1 percent from the field this season as Steignega leads the team with field goal percentage of 66.1.
 
Panthers vs. Golden Eagles
In the all-time series between Davenport and Cornerstone, the Golden Eagles lead the all-time series winning 15 of the 24 all-time meeting between the two programs. Cornerstone won the first ten meetings between the two schools before Davenport won the next three. Since Burt Paddock took over as head coach of Davenport, the Panthers lead the series 9-5. Last season, Davenport was able to edge out Cornerstone on the road, but the Golden Eagles won the final two meeting including the WHAC Championship game.
 
The Last Time They Met
The last time the Panthers and Golden Eagles met was in the WHAC Championship game the?Mol Arena. Dominez Burnett and former Panther, JaVontae Ford combined for 55 points, but last seasons WHAC Player of the Year, Wes Hudson, scored 31 points for Cornerstone en route to a 73- 66 win over Davenport. After the Golden Eagles led the Panthers by three at halftime, Cornerstone created some separation late in the game against Davenport as they outscored the Panthers by four points in the second half.
