Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Women’s Basketball over Rival Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The second-ranked Davenport women's basketball continued their hot start to the season on Saturday afternoon as the defeated crosstown rival Cornerstone 73-42. Kayleigh VanKeulen led the Lady Panthers with 14 points and chipped in with four rebounds as Davenport moves to 9-0 on the season and is 6-0 in the WHAC. The Lady Panthers will be back in action on next Saturday when they host Michigan-Dearborn at 1 p.m.
 
Kayleigh VanKeulen led Davenport with 14 points in the game as she was 5-for-7 from the field in the game and was 4-for-5 from the behind the arc. Daina Grazulis chipped in with 12 points and led the Lady Panthers in rebounding with six boards in the game, and Molly Babbs capped off the Davenport players in double-figures with ten points in the game.
 
In the first half, Davenport jumped out to an early 8-0 after back-to-back threes from Kayleigh VanKeulen and Linnea Brandholm followed by a layup from Kelly Dineen. Cornerstone battled back to cut the Davenport lead to four points and both teams traded baskets until the Panthers went on an 18-7 run to close out the first half, capped off by a layup by Dineen to beat the buzzer to give DU a 39-20 lead at halftime.
 
Both teams traded baskets to start the second half, but the Panthers used a 12-0 run to take 57-29 lead over the Golden Eagles with 10:53 left regulation. The Lady Panthers took their largest lead of the game at 36 points with 2:36 remaining after Molly Babbs made a layup to cap off her ten point day.
 
Davenport will close out WHAC play in the first semester next Saturday against Michigan-Dearborn at the DU Student Center with the opening tip scheduled for 3 p.m.
 
Post-Game Notes
VanKeulen and Babbs both finished two points shy of tying their career high point totals against the Golden Eagles… In the game the Panthers shot 44.4 percent from the field, which is their lowest since the team's first game of the season against Cardinal Stritch when they shot 38.5 percent from the field.
