GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 15 ranked men's basketball team came into Saturday's contest needing a win to get back into second place and they reached that spot thanks to a solid defensive performance with a 71-60 victory over Madonna. The win lifts the Panthers to 19-5 on the year and 12-4 in league action as they will return to the court on Wednesday at UM-Dearborn.

Dominez Burnett led the Panthers in scoring for the second straight game with 19 points and he was joined in double-figures by JaVontae Ford (16), DeArmond Davis (11) and Kevin Rich (10). DU overcame a slow start shooting the ball to finish the day 26-61 (42.6%) while they finished with 10 steals on the night on the defensive end.

Madonna, who had a nine-game winning streak snapped by No. 6 Cornerstone on Wednesday, got the early lead thanks to six straight points but the Panthers responded with a 14-3 run over the next 4:50 finished off by a layup from Dawid Czerniawski with 12:00 to play. The lead grew to as many as eight in the opening half before the Crusaders closed with a 14-3 run of their own to take a 34-33 lead into the break.

The Panthers recovered quickly into the second half and scored the first four points on layups from Dominez Burnett and JaVontae Ford to re-take the lead and it would be one they would hold for the remainder of the game. After the Crusaders cut the margin down to just two at 48-46 with 13:48 to play, DU used a 13-5 run over the next seven minutes to increase the lead to 10 on a bucket from DeArmond Davis.

Davenport was able to slow the pace down in the final minutes to preserve the 11-point win and finish with the regular season sweep of a team that beat them three times a year ago. Madonna's Bobby Naubert led all scorers with 21 points while MU finished just 35.6% from the field including a dismal 5-19 (26.3%) from behind the arc.

The No. 15 ranked Panthers are now tied for second in the WHAC standings at 12-4 along with Madonna University. DU will travel to UM-Dearborn on Wednesday for an 8 p.m. tip against the Wolverines.
