GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The trio of
Nick Gamble,
Kevin Rich and
JaVontae Ford combined for 40 points today to lead the No. 9 Panthers to a 67-46 win over Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon. The victory lifts Davenport to 23-5 on the season and 16-4 in league play and they will resume play on Wednesday at home when they welcome in UM-Dearborn for an 8 p.m. tip.
Nick Gamble posted his second straight standout game vs. his hometown team as the freshman posted a team high 15 points to join
Kevin Rich (14) and
JaVontae Ford in double-figures. DU limited the Warriors to just 17 second half points as they outrebounded their opponents by 12 while holding them to a shooting percentage of 39.1.
In a back and forth opening half that featured seven lead changes, Davenport was able to use a big run midway through to open a nine point lead but the Warriors closed by scoring five straight points to go into the locker room down 33-29.
After not scoring in the opening half for the second straight game, sophomore
Dominez Burnett came out and scored five straight points including a thunderous slam dunk to up the lead to 10 and DU never looked back. The margin continued to grow and after back to back buckets from
Nick Gamble and a three-point play from
JaVontae Ford, the Panthers held a 19-point lead (58-39) with 6:25 to play. The largest margin came late in the contest when freshman
Cameron Burns scored on a layup.
Other statistical leaders for the Panthers were
Dawid Czerniawski with six rebounds,
Mike Betcher with four assists and
JaVontae Ford with a pair of steals. Indiana Tech was led by 10 points from Nick Lewis.
The Panthers will remain at home for their next two games beginning Wednesday when they welcome in UM-Dearborn for an 8 p.m. tip. The Panthers defeated the Wolverines 60-39 back on February 5.
