GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – JaVontae Ford made sure his final regular-season game at the DU Student Center wasn't a quiet one Saturday afternoon.
The senior scored 25 points, 16 in the first half, and brought down 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, and with Jon Prins, Brendan Cooper, Mike Betcher and DeArmond Davis, the soon-to-be graduates and the rest of the ninth-ranked Davenport men's basketball team cruised to an 83-48 over Siena Heights in the final scheduled game.
The Panthers, who finish the regular season 25-5 overall and 18-4 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, enter the league tournament with second seed and will host the first two rounds starting Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The opponent is to be announced later.
Siena Heights (11-19, 7-14 WHAC) meanwhile misses out on the tournament after finishing ninth in the standings.
The five seniors, who all got the starting nod from head coach Burt Paddock, combined for 31 points and 17 rebounds. Dominez Burnett led the bench 15 points followed by Nick Gamble with 10. Davenport went 28-for-56 (50 percent) from the field and 17-for-26 (65.4) in free throw opportunities.
The Saints battled with the five seniors from tipoff. Christian Covile had seven of his team-leading 13-point day to give the Saints a 7-6 lead until Burnett, Braima Hai and Dawid Czerniawski checked in for the first time with 3:36 into the game and started a 15-2 run in the span of over five minutes.
Davenport went into intermission with a commanding 47-27 lead. Ford was the only Panther in double figures with 16 points and added five rebounds.
The Panthers led by as many as 41 points in the game, when none other than Ford hitting a 3-pointer to take a 79-38 lead with 4:11 left in the contest.
