No. 6 Men’s Rugby Starts Spring Season with Shutout of Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Davenport men's rugby team officially started their spring season with a 46-0 win over Clemson. Leading the way for the Panthers was Reece Czarnecki who scored three tries in the game for a total of 15 points. DU is now 5-2 overall on the season in 15s and is 1-0 in their spring season. The Panthers will play an exhibition game against Life University on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Marietta, Ga., before they start their Mid-South Conference schedule on March 8 when they travel to State University, Ark. to play Arkansas State.
 
The Panthers came out firing in the opening minutes as Brady Gent scored his first try of the game; Gent was then unable to capitalize on the conversion as DU took a 5-0 lead after the first five minutes of play. Eight minutes later, Gabe Sochanek scored his only try of the game to increase the Davenport lead to ten.
 
After a scoreless period midway through the first half, the Panthers scored two tries back to back to close out the first half with a 22-0 lead. Czarnecki scored his first try of the game and Mason Baum also added a try, as Gent made one of the final two conversions to close out the half with Davenport leading.
 
Czarnecki opened the second half scoring for the Panthers with his second try of the game at the 47 minute mark to give DU a 27-0 lead just seven minutes into the second half. In the 52nd minute, Sondai Adjei scored his first try of the spring season for DU, and Nick Glocke tacked on two more points with a successful conversion.
 
Davenport closed out the game with two more tries and one successful conversion to capture their first win of the spring season. Roman Mares scored in the 56th minute and Glocke added his second conversion of the night. Czarnecki than capped off the scoring for the Panthers with his third and final try of the night, and Alex Dorrier was unable to capitalize on the conversion, as DU beat Clemson 46-0.
 
The Panthers will head to Marietta, Ga. on Saturday to face Life University in an exhibition game at 2 p.m. before they open up their Mid-South Conference games when they travel to Arkansas to play Arkansas State on March 8.
