DEARBORN, Mich. –
Dominez Burnett finished with a double-double for the Panthers as the sophomore posted 10 points and 13 rebounds while
Kevin Rich was the game's leading scorer at 12 as the duo helped the Panthers post their sixth straight 20-win season thanks to a 60-39 victory over UM-Dearborn. The 39 points is the fewest given up by DU this season as they improve to 20-5 overall and 13-4 in WHAC play. The Panthers return to the Student Center Saturday to host Aquinas at 3 p.m.
In a game that featured 29 different players taking the court, 16 for the Wolverines and 13 for DU, it was the Panthers who raced out to a 15-point halftime lead and increased that margin to 21 by the end of the night to remain in second place in the conference standings.
DU rattled off the first 13 points of the contest as they got baskets by five different players during the run. The Wolverines did not get on the scoreboard until almost five minutes into the half and mustered only 14 more for the remaining 20 minutes.
The lead grew to as many as 20 for the Panthers in the opening half when
Jon Prins hit a jumper with 2:08 to play but the home squad closed with a 5-0 run and then opened the second half by scoring the first field goal to cut the margin to 13. That would be as close as the Wolverines would get however as DU led by as many as 24 on a field goal from senior
JaVontae Ford midway through the closing half.
The Panthers continued to struggle from behind the arc as they connected on just three of 15 from long range but they were 50% from inside the arc (17-34) while also going 17-25 from the charity stripe. DU forced the Wolverines into 21 turnovers and doubled them up on the glass 42-21.
Davenport will now return home for four of their five remaining contests beginning Saturday against cross-town foe Aquinas College.
Post-Game Notes
The 39 points are the fewest allowed by DU this season and the first time since January 2, 2013 (vs. UM-Dearborn) that they have allowed less than 40…
JaVontae Ford needs just 16 points to tie James Nelson's all-time scoring record at DU…The Panthers are now 15-3 all-time when playing as the No. 10 ranked team in NAIA DII
