GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
JaVontae Ford poured in 22 points on Saturday and became the school's all-time leading scorer in the process as he led the No. 10 ranked Panthers to a 77-64 win over Aquinas College. Ford passed the mark set by James Nelson from 2007-2011 and as he helped DU improve to 21-5 overall and 14-4 in WHAC play. Davenport will resume play on Wednesday in their final road contest of the year at Concordia.
Dominez Burnett and
JaVontae Ford combined for 46 points to help Davenport post a season sweep of rival Aquinas with a 13-point win on Saturday.
DeArmond Davis pulled down a team high seven rebounds and two blocks to inch his way closer to the school record of 105 while
Nick Gamble led the squad with four assists.
In an opening half full of runs, Davenport went up 12-3 early only to see the Saints fight back with six straight points to make it 12-9. The Panthers then rattled of 11 straight to post their largest lead of the first half (14) when
JaVontae Ford finished the run to force the Saints into a timeout.
The lead then hovered between 6-10 points before DU finished by scoring four straight to end the half with points by
Nick Gamble and
Dominez Burnett to lead 39-26.
The lead continued to grow in the second half and after Ford connected on his second triple of the half, the crowd was let know of the record-breaking shot in which they gave the senior a standing ovation. Davenport held its largest lead of 21 on two different occasions with the first coming at the 4:35 mark when
Mike Betcher connected on one of seven triples for DU in the contest.
The Panthers finished the night shooting 50.8% from the floor while forcing the Saints into 17 turnovers.
The Panthers will resume play on Wednesday when they play their final road game of the regular season in Ann Arbor against Concordia University. DU defeated the Cardinals 81-75 in the team's first meeting back on January 8 in Grand Rapids.
