GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport D1 hockey team looked to keep the momentum going as they looked to sweep Adrian, but
Mason Bohlinger was the only goal scorer for the Panthers as they dropped the final GLCHL game of the season to Adrian 5-1. DU is now 21-10-0-3 on the season and finishes the GLCHL with a 16-7-0-1 conference record. The Panthers will host Robert Morris (Ill.) for two games next weekend starting on Friday at 8:30 p.m., as DU will play their final weekend series of the regular season.
The Panthers looked to start the first period the same way and tried to get an early lead, but Adrian was able to grab the lead with eight minutes left in the period after they jumped on a loose puck and put home the first goal of the contest. With less than two minutes remaining the Bulldogs increased their lead on a power play goal to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The second period saw a lot of the same as the first DU tired to dictate the tempo of play, but Adrian flipped the ice every time the Panthers were able to sustain some pressure. The Bulldogs increased their lead after a Bulldog forward was able to slip past the Panthers and beat
Phil Graveline.
Later in the period the Bulldogs had a five-on-three man advantage and after Graveline made a diving save to keep it a three goal game the puck found it way to the point and Adrian scored to get their fourth goal of the game. The Panthers had a few power play chances in the period, but were unable to cut into the deficit as DU trailed 4-0 after the second period.
DU started the period on a great note as
Mason Bohlinger put away his team leading 20th goal of the season to cut the lead to three goals. The Panthers looked to keep the momentum going as they were on the power play just a few minutes after scoring their first goal of the game, but could not score on the power play.
After the Panthers scored, Adrian came right back to make it a four game, as the puck was deflected pass
Matt Kaludis with ten minutes remaining in regulation. After both teams took penalties to finish of the game the Bulldogs prevailed with a 5-1 win.
After the game head coach
Phil Sweeney talked about his team's play in the game, "The guys were very frustrated early and we just made some bad plays early that turned into easy goals. We dug ourselves a hole and we could not come back. It was tough with what we have on the line, tonight was not what we needed."
Sweeney then talked about heading into next weekend, "We can't sit around a sulk, we should let it sink in, but we have to move past it, and we have to play well next weekend. We have to have our best four practices of the year and we have to have our best two games of the year to go where we want to."
The Panthers will be back on the ice next weekend as they host No. 2 Robert Morris (Ill.) to play the final two regular season games of the season.
Post-Game Notes
The Panthers finished the GLCHL regular season with a 16-7-0-1 record and will be the second seed heading into the conference tournament in two weeks. For the first time this semester the Panthers were out shot as Adrian put 33 shots on net and Davenport was only to out 22 on net.
Mason Bohlinger tallied his team leading 20th goal of the season as
Cody Walsh and
Robert Kleiman picked up the assists.
