GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The sixth-ranked Davenport men's rugby team started their three game home stand on Saturday against third-ranked Arkansas State. Willy Urena and Alexander Dorrier each scored a try for the Panthers but the team fell short as they lost to the Red Wolves 24-18. Davenport is now 5-6 overall and 0-4 in the Mid-South Conference. DU will continue their home stand next weekend when they host Lindenwood next Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
In the early going, Arkansas State was able to control the tempo of play and keep the ball in the Davenport half of the field and the Red Wolves scored the first try of the game just six minutes in. Following the Arkansas State try, Davenport stormed down the field and Brady Gent was able to convert on a penalty kick to put the Panthers on the board.
 
Davenport flipped the momentum to tack on a try in the 20th minute when Alexander Dorrier jumped on a loose ball beyond the try line, and Gent was successful on the conversion to give the Panthers a 10-7 lead at half time.
 
Coming out of the half, Shaun Paterson of Arkansas State scored two tries to take a 19-10 lead with 34 minutes remaining in the second half. Just seven minutes later, Willy Urena started the Davenport come back with a try, but Gent was unable to make the conversion as DU trailed 19-15.
 
Arkansas State tried to pull away late as they scored another try in the 69th minutes, but Davenport kept charging as Nick Glocke scored a penalty kick to the bring the Panthers within six. DU had position in the final minutes trying to take the lead, but Arkansas State stood tall to hang on to win 24-18.
 
The Panthers will host Lindenwood next Saturday at 1 p.m. as they play the second game of their three game home stand.
