No. 7 Men’s Rugby Starts Mid-South Conference Play with No. 3 Arkansas State


GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The seventh ranked Davenport men's rugby team will open their Mid-South Conference schedule this week when they travel down to Arkansas. The Panthers are coming into the game after going 2-1 on their spring break trip beating Louisville in an exhibition game followed by a win against Clemson to officially start the second half their season. DU finished the trip with an exhibition loss against Life University's club team. The Panthers will open up their conference schedule against Arkansas State on Saturday at 1 p.m. in State University, Ark.
 
SCOUTING ARKANSAS STATE
 
The Arkansas State Red Wolves enter the weekend ranked third in the country in D1A rugby. The Red Wolves are coming in after dropping a 34-7 decision to Life University last weekend, and are now 1-1 in the Mid-South Conference. This will be last game for Arkansas State before they travel up to Grand Rapids, Mich. to play Davenport again on March 29. With two games back-to-back against the Panthers and a lengthy gap in between the two games, Arkansas State will be able to learn a lot from this weekend.
 
Connor Cook has the scoring touch for the Red Wolves as he scored two tries, two conversions and two penalty kicks in their first game of the spring against Lindenwood. Gavin Brown and Shaun Paterson also tallied tries in the 25-17 win over the Lions.
 
THE PANTHERS
 
Reece Czarnecki led the way for the team with three tries in the first game of the spring season for Davenport. In 15s play thus far, Gabe Sochanek has led the way for the Panthers with 30 points and six tries, while freshman Sondai Adjei is right behind him with 29 points. Adjei and Brady Gent have been handling the majority of the kicking duties this season. Gent is 6-for-14 on conversions, while Adjei 4-for-10.
 
Davenport is in their second season playing in D1A rugby and is starting their second season in the Mid-South Conference. After going 0-4 last season against Life and Arkansas State, DU is still searching for their first Mid-South Conference win.
 
The Panthers will travel down to State University, Ark. to face No. 3 Arkansas State on Saturday at 1 p.m. to kickoff their Mid-South Conference schedule.
