Late Arkansas State Surge Dooms No. 7 Men’s Rugby in 15-10 Loss

STATE UNIVERSITY, Ark. – Dominique Bailey and Travis Kamstra led the seventh-ranked men's rugby team with one try each. Davenport lost to No. 3 Arkansas State 15-10, and the Panthers are now 5-3 on the season and are 0-1 in the Mid-South Conference. DU will now face off against Mid-South Conference newcomer No. 6 Lindenwood next weekend in St. Charles, Mo. at 1 p.m.
 
The Panthers looked to pick up their first Mid-South Conference win after going 0-4 last season against Life and Arkansas State. The Red Wolves of Arkansas State started the game with a try in the early going, but the Panthers came storming back to tie the game at five after Dominique Bailey scored Davenport's first try of the game. Both defenses stood tall as the score was tied 5-5 at halftime.
 
DU came out strong in the second half, as Travis Kamstra scored the first try of the half to give the Panthers a 10-5 lead. Davenport's defense stood strong to keep Arkansas State from scoring, but the Red Wolves scored a try with 10 minutes remaining and capitalized on the conversion to take a 12-10 lead. Arkansas State closed out the game with a successful penalty kick to win the game 15-10.   
 
The Panthers will head to St. Charles, Mo. next weekend as they face No. 6 Lindenwood who is in their first season in D1A Rugby and the Mid-South Conference. Kickoff for the game is at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 8.
