GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's rugby team was in search of their first Mid-South Conference win on Saturday, as
Brady Gent scored seven points, while
Mason Baum and
Sondai Adjei each scored a try as Davenport lost to Lindenwood 21-17 on a last minute score by the Lions. The Panthers are now 5-7 on the season and 0-5 in the Mid-South Conference. Davenport will close out their regular season schedule next Saturday in a match against Life University on the DU Turf Field at 1 p.m.
In the early going, Davenport had a penalty kick chance to take a lead, but
Brady Gent pushed the kick wide and the game remained scoreless. In the 16th minute, Gent converted on his second penalty kick opportunity of the game to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
Lindenwood was able gain position of the ball near the Davenport try line with 15 minutes remaining and the Panthers were able to hold the Lions from scoring for about three minutes, but Benjamin O'Donnell was able to find a seam and scored to give Lindenwood a 7-3 lead heading in the half.
The Lions came out and scored their second try of the game just six minutes into the second half, and the conversion following the score was good to give Lindenwood a 14-3 lead with 36 minutes remaining in the game. In the 50th minute,
Sondai Adjei kicked the ball forward and it popped over the head of a Lindenwood player and
Mason Baum jumped on the ball in the try zone and touched it down for a score. Gent capitalized on the conversion to cut the Lindenwood lead to four points.
Five minutes later, Lindenwood tried to increase their lead with a penalty kick, but the attempt missed wide right and the score was 14-10 in favor of the Lions with 25 minutes left in the second half. After an errant Lindenwood pass, Adjei was able to intercept the ball and take it the other way for a try, and Gent made his second conversion of the game to give Davenport their first lead of the game with 16 minutes remaining in the game.
Both teams traded position of the ball around midfield until and Lincoln Magee intercepted a Davenport pass and he had a wide-open field and scored a try with less than two minutes left in regulation. Morgan Findley capped off the scoring with a conversion to give Lindenwood the win 21-17.
Davenport is now 5-7 on the season and drops to 0-5 in the Mid-South Conference, while Lindenwood moves to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the Mid-South.
The Panthers will close out their regular season next Saturday when they host second-ranked Life University on the DU Turf Field at 1 p.m. on Senior Day for Davenport.
