SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The No. 24 Davenport baseball team struck early with a run and held eighth-ranked San Diego Christian's offense in check, but a throwing error during a double play attempt in the fifth allowed the top seeded Hawks to score two runs and escape with a 2-1 victory in the fifth game of the NAIA Opening Round Tuesday. The Panthers, who saw their seven-game win streak snap, will move to the loser's bracket in the double-elimination format and face either Vanguard or British Columbia Wednesday at 2 p.m. EDT.
The lone run Davenport (42-16) scored in the first was on a RBI single by Jordan Zylstra with the bases loaded. While racking up 11 hits and drawing six walks, the Panthers stranded 13 runners on base. DU also had the bases loaded in the first, fifth and ninth innings but couldn't quite find the clutch hit to produce runs.
Facing a heavy right-handed hitting lineup, southpaw veteran Jordan Anderson (5-1) limited the Hawks to reaching second base for the first four innings. But Anderson got into trouble in the fifth when he loaded the bases on back-to-back walks and a hit with one out. Ryan Butzer checked in and got the first batter he faced to hit into a ground ball to shortstop Derek Dennis, who made a toss to Jordan Zylstra to second for the force out but the throw to first attempting a double play sailed over Brendan Bender and into the Panthers dugout, allowing the Hawks to take a 2-1 lead.
Anderson was handed his first loss of the season despite allowing three hits and four walks while punching out six on 95 pitches.
Post-Game Notes
Davenport loses the first meeting with San Diego Christian…While making playing their second game in the national tournament, the Panthers are 8-9 postseason including the WHAC Tournament
