GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A big third inning was too much to overcome for the No. 22 ranked Davenport Softball team as they saw their 2014 season come to a close on Wednesday with an 11-2 setback to No. 4 Olivet Nazarene. The loss is the second of the NAIA Opening Round for DU against the Tigers as ONU advances to the NAIA World Series in Georgia. First year head coach
McCall Salmon and her team close out the campaign with an overall record of 38-10.
Olivet Nazarene came into the Davenport Bracket seeded No. 1 and boasting a national ranking of number four and they proved to be the best this week winning the championship game 11-2 in five innings over the host Panthers. The Tigers improve to 49-3-1 on the season and will now play in the NAIA Softball World Series just outside of Atlanta, Ga.
The Tigers wasted little time in getting the lead as they scored two in the top of the first on a 2-out, 2-run homerun to take a 2-0 lead. DU did get one back in the bottom half on a single from freshman
Alyssa Eastman that scored
Karli Myers.
Neither team scored in the second but then the bats came alive for ONU in the third as they brought across six in the frame to take a commanding 8-1 lead. And after the Tigers put up three more in the fifth, DU needed to score at least three to keep the game going but managed only a
Debra Burton sacrifice fly that scored
Katie Creighton as they fell 11-2.
Eastman took the loss in the circle to fall to 17-3 on the season.
