BELLEVUE, Neb.  – Playing their second straight NAIA Top-10 opponent, this time at the Bellevue Labor Day Classic, the Panthers battled again but fell by a similar 3-1 score to fall to 0-2 on the season. The loss to No. 5 Northwestern (Iowa) came in the opening match of the tournament as DU will face No. 16 Mid America Nazarene at 6 p.m. EST tonight.
Davenport once again proved it belonged on the court as some of the top teams in the country on Friday morning but it was the veteran Red Raider squad that battled a little bit harder to pull out the 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23) win.
The Panthers struggled from the beginning in the opening set but then came back strong in the second as they led by as many as eight points in route to the 25-22 win. After going back and forth in the third, Northwestern rallied late to earn a 25-22 victory in the third and then closed out DU 25-23 for the 3-1 win.
Junior
Molly Lameyer led Davenport with 12 kills as she was one of two Panthers to hit above .300 on the match.
Marcey DeHaan hit a team high .333 while posting nine kills on 24 attempts.
Morgan Torres led the squad with 11 digs while
Amber Getty had 31 assists.
DU will face No. 16 Mid America Nazarene (Kan.) at 6 p.m. EST on Friday evening.
Post-Match NotesThe first two opponents of the 2014 campaign for the Davenport Volleyball team both appeared in the Round of 16 at the NAIA National Tournament…Six different players finished with at least five digs in the match…It marks the second straight season DU has played at least one Top-5 opponent in the country
