MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Dzenan Catic has picked up right where he left off a record-breaking campaign from a year ago as the junior notched two more goals including the game winner with just under three minutes to play to help No. 21 Davenport post a 4-3 upset of No. 2 Auburn-Montgomery. The win lifts the Panthers to 2-0-0 on the season as they will be in action next Friday against No. 4 Ashford University (Iowa).
The last time the men's soccer team played against the No. 2 team in the country, they left falling 5-0 in the 2010 NAIA National Tournament. Thanks to a pair of goals from Dzenan Catic and one each from
TJ Ifaturoti and
Jacob Love, the Panthers leave Montgomery with a win over the highest ranked opponent any Davenport team has beat outside of the women's basketball program.
Catic got the scoring started in the first on a perfectly placed ball from
Lito Esquivel and DU was off to the races. The Panthers added to the lead just 18 minutes later when TJ Ifatorti knocked one in after a through ball from
Chris Rassel with 12:20 remaining in the half. AUM did get within a goal with their first of the match in the 35
th minute and DU went into the break leading 2-1.
That lead quickly grew to 3-1 in the 47
th minute when
Jacob Love buried one on a drop ball from Dzenan Catic and it looked as if DU would run away but the defending national runners-up scored back to back goals in a 10 minute span to tie the match at 3-3 with 27 minutes to play.
Just as the time neared 90 minutes, Catic's heroics struck again as the junior headed in a ball from
Chad Gordon at the 87:19 mark to ultimately give DU the upset win.
Aaron Orban came on in relief in net of starter
Alex Ghattas and got his first collegiate victory as the freshman finished with a pair of saves.
Davenport's tough early season schedule continues next weekend when they will face No. 4 ranked Ashford University at 4 p.m. at the RedStorm Classic hosted by Rio Grande (Ohio). The Saints were one of two teams to receive first place votes in the NAIA Top-25 poll.
Post-Match NotesThe win is the second straight for the men's soccer team over an NAIA Top-25 program which are the only two wins ever over ranked foes in the history of the program…The win is the first ever for DU over Auburn Montgomery as they had lost their previous two matches (2012 and 2010)…The 2-0 start marks only the third time in school history they have done that (2013 and 2005)
