GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Ty Fischer scored the first goal just 2:37 into the match and then
Jacob Love and Dzenan Catic added a combined five more to help the Panthers post eight tallies for the second straight match with an 8-1 victory over Huntington (Ind.). The No. 21 ranked Panthers finish their non-conference slate with an overall record of 7-1 as they now prepare for defense of their WHAC crown starting next Saturday against UM-Dearborn at 7 p.m.
In their final prep before conference play begins next week, head coach
Chris Hughes got goals from five different players including a hat-trick from junior Dzenan Catic and a pair from
Jacob Love in the 7-goal win over Huntington.
Aaron Orban improved to 3-0 in net as the freshman made two saves while allowing the single goal.
After DU had scored the opener from
Tyler Fischer, the Panthers got two more in the next nine minutes to race out to a 3-0 lead. The Foresters struck with their lone goal in the 13' on a set piece from a corner kick but that would be their only offense of the match, mustering just six shots (three on goal).
Leading 4-1 at halftime after
Chris Rassel scored his first of the season late in the opening 45, the Panthers put up the same number in the second with two goals from Dzenan Catic (50', 57') and one each from
Jacob Love (65') and
Bernard Brnada (88').
Davenport finished with 20 shots (11 on goal) and led the amount of corners 9-3. DU will now have one week to prepare for their conference opener which comes at home on Saturday against UM-Dearborn.
Post-Match NotesDavenport improves to 30-8-2 all-time on the Turf Field which was built in 2008…The hat trick by Dzenan Catic was the second this season and fifth of his career…The Panthers won the inaugural matchup with Huntington (Ind.)
