GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Tyler Fischer and
Lito Esquivel each scored in the opening half and then No. 3 Davenport poured in three more in the second to open conference play with a 5-0 defeat of UM-Dearborn. The Panthers have won their last 11 games in league play dating back to last season as they improve to 8-1-0 on the year. DU will remain at home for their next contest when they welcome Concordia on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
The UM-Dearborn defense made for some interesting moments on Saturday night but the Panther offense was too much at the end of the night seeing four different players score and Dzenan Catic collecting his NAIA leading 15
th and 16
th goals.
After a slow first 10 minutes that saw the Wolverines actually have two great chances, the Panthers broke through on a nice cross from
Chris Rassel that was headed in by
Tyler Fischer. Just over three minutes later,
Lito Esquivel took a through ball from
Kevin LaCroix and beat the keeper one on one to up the lead to 2-0.
The second half saw a much more aggressive Panther team post three goals in a 2:30 span with two coming from Dzenan Catic and one from
Jacob Love.
Aaron Orban posted his first career shutout in net as the freshman made two outstanding saves in the first half and finished with four on the night.
Davenport will now turn their attention to Concordia who will visit Grand Rapids on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Post-Match NotesThe two-goal match is the third straight multi-goal match for Catic and sixth of the season for the junior…Davenport has outscored its last three opponents at home 21-4…The Panthers have never lost to UM-Dearborn as they have outscored the Wolverines 10-1 in the three meetings.
