Volleyball Rallies from Slow Start to Down Cornerstone in Beltline Rivalry

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – After dropping the opening set by the slimmest of margins, the volleyball team rallied with dominating performances in the final three to take a crucial early season matchup with rival Cornerstone in four sets. CU won the opener 25-23 but then saw the Panthers roar back with 25-14, 25-10 and 25-22 wins to improve to 10-4 on the year and 5-1 in league play.

The Panthers got 12 kills from Marcey DeHaan and 11 from Hannah Stone while Molly Lameyer and Krissy Dill each chipped in with nine to lead the Panthers to a big win over their rival up the East Beltline. Freshman libero Morgan Torres led the defensive effort as she posted 23 digs while Lexie Spetoskey chipped in with 18. Amber Getty had an all-around match as the red-shirt senior finished with 35 assists, 11 digs and seven kills.

The opening set went back and forth before Cornerstone scored the final two points for a 2-point win of 25-23. After the close defeat, DU roared back in the next two winning by a combined 26 points. The Panthers hit .296 in the second and topped it with a .394 performance in the third to take a commanding 2-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles, who had just upset No. 5 and No. 14 in the country over the weekend, raced out to a big lead in the fourth and had their biggest lead at 13-6 but DU slowly chipped away and went ahead at 16-15 on a CU attack error. The lead grew to four after three straight kills from Marcey DeHaan and DU closed out the match with a 25-22 win.

Davenport will look to continue their strong play on Friday when they welcome in Marygrove College for a 7 p.m. match inside the Student Center.
