GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's rugby team had their season home opener Saturday against the University of Western Ontario. This was the second time the Panthers and Mustangs squared off against one another in the past seven days. Although the Panthers were able to come out victorious in their previous match, the same could not be said this time around as they fell short by a score of 27-14. The Panthers will be in action next weekend as they travel to University Park, PA to face Penn State.
Davenport fell behind early as Western Ontario was on the board first just 10 minutes into the first half. After the Mustangs took an early 7-0 lead, the Panthers fired back with a try from
Knute O'Donnell, which was his first of two on the night.
The Mustangs went on to tally two more tries and a penalty kick, which gave them15 unanswered points to close out the first half. The Panthers trailed 22-7 heading into halftime.
The Panthers came out firing in the second half as O'Donnell put Davenport on the board again with his second try of the game.
Brady Gent added in his second conversion of the game as the Panthers cut the deficit to eight points.
Just as DU had made it an interesting contest again, Western Ontario countered back with a try of their own to make the score 27-14. The Panthers found themselves in Mustang territory several times in the backend of the second half, but could not manage to come away with any points as the game ended with a score of 27-14 Mustang victory.
