D1 Hockey Comes Back to Beat Oakland to Reclaim Good Luck DUck

Story Links

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport D1 hockey team looked to reclaim the Good Luck DUck after the beat Oakland on Friday night. Davenport scored four unanswered goals in the third period, and Cameron Dimmit had two goals en route to a 4-2 win for the Panthers to win the Good Luck DUck series 3-1 and reclaim the duck. Davenport will now hit the road next weekend as they head to St. Charles, Mo., to face Lindenwood next Friday and Saturday.

The physicality from the first game of the series carried over into game two, as Oakland was able to start the game holding pressure in the Davenport, but Clayton Brown was able to stand strong in net to keep the Grizzlies at ease. Davenport was able to flip the ice in the second half of the period, but Davenport was not able to find the back of the net as the score was still tied at zero after the first period.

Oakland was able to break the ice with 13:14 left in the second period to take a 1-0 lead, and Davenport tried to come back to tie the game, but the Oakland defense was able to deflect the pucks away from the front of the net. The Grizzlies had a couple scoring chances late in the period, but Brown was able to keep the Panther deficit to one goal heading into the third period.

The Golden Grizzlies were able to start the period the same way they start the first two, as they held the puck in the Panther end, and Oakland was able to take a 2-0 lead with 12:17 left in the third period after the pass slide across the slot to an open Grizzly forward who was able to put it behind the Brown. Less than a minute later Cameron Dimmit got the Panthers on the board as he was able to roof the puck short side on a rush to bring the Panthers back within one goal with 11:23 left in regulation.

Davenport finally found their stride late in the third period as Jordan Simmonds was able to drag the puck through the goal crease a slid the puck through the legs of the Oakland net minder to tie the game with 6:41 left in regulation. Dimmit scored his second goal of the game on a power play to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead and Everett Thompson capped off the game with an empty net goal to give the Panthers 4-2 win to reclaim the Good Luck DUck.

After the game head coach Phil Sweeney talked about winning the duck back, "I'm just so happy for our guys, we did not have the best start today, but they showed so much heart. They have worked so hard all season long and they deserve a win like this."

The Panthers will now have to refocus their attention as they hit the road next weekend to face non-conference foe Lindenwood in a pair of games next weekend.
