ADRIAN, Mich. – After the slow start against Siena Heights on Wednesday, the Davenport men's basketball team came out strong in the second half to beat Siena Heights 69-61. After scoring just six points in the first half,
Dominez Burnett ended the game with 29 to lead the Panthers for the 17th time this season as Davenport is now 18-3 on the season and remains atop the WHAC standings at 12-1. Davenport will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host crosstown rival Cornerstone in a crucial WHAC matchup.
Dominez Burnett scored 23 points in the second half for the Panthers to lead the team with 29 points and had nine rebounds to lead the team, while
Kevin Rich chipped in with 17 points and
Nick Gamble had ten points for Davenport.
In the opening half, Siena Heights came charging out of the gates as they scored the first five points of the game to take an early lead. Davenport than came back on an 11-2 run to take an 11-7 lead, which was their largest lead of the half with 16:56 left in the first half. Both team continued to trade baskets, until Siena Heights went on a 10-0 run in the final 4:11 of the first half to take a 38-30 lead into the half.
The Panthers started the second half strong as they started the second half on an 11-0 in the first 3:36 of the half to take a 41-38 lead over the Saints. Davenport continued to their run to start the half as they jumped out to a 50-41 lead with 12:14 left in the second half. Siena Heights pulled within five points with 9:19 left in regulation, but Davenport continued to stretch their lead as they took their largest lead of the game at the 5:15 mark with a score of 61-49. The Saints continued to battle back, but the Panthers went onto win the game 69-61.
The Panthers will now host Cornerstone at the DU Student Center on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in crucial WHAC matchup.
Post-Game NotesDavenport held a 39-30 rebounding edge of Siena Heights after the teams had 17 rebounds apiece in the first half… The Panther forced the Saints to 16 turnovers and Davenport set a new season high in blocks with six against Siena Heights… After blocking six shots in their first meeting, which was a season high for any Davenport opponent, the Saints only tallied one block in the game on Saturday night… In their first six games of 2015, Davenport played five of those games on the road and won all five games, along with their lone home game against Lourdes.
