Crosstown Rival Aquinas Visits Men’s Basketball on Wednesday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's basketball team will welcome their second Beltline rival in as many days to the DU Student Center as Aquinas visits the Student Center for the first time this season. The Panthers are coming to the week after two come from behind wins against Siena Heights and Cornerstone. Davenport holds a one game lead in the WHAC over second-place, Northwestern Ohio. Tipoff between Davenport and Aquinas is set for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. with Rick Berkey calling the game live on the DAN.

A Quick Look at Aquinas – 13-9, 9-5 WHAC – Head Coach Dave Hammer
The Saints come into the matchup with the 12th best scoring defense in the NAIA as they allow their opponent to score 64.2 points per game. Aquinas scores and average of 66.4 points per game as Anthony Williams leads the team with 15.4 points per game in is the only player for the Saints to average double figures on the season. Two weeks ago, in the game against Cornerstone, Williams went 22-for-22 from the free throw line, which set a school record and tied the NAIA record for made free throws. The last time the Saints were in action was on the road against Northwestern Ohio, where Aquinas fell short of their comeback as they lost to the Racers, 67-65. 
 
Panthers vs. Saints
The Saints lead the all-time series between Davenport and Aquinas as they hold a 16-11 series lead of the Panthers. Aquinas won the first 13 meetings between the two programs, but Davenport has won the 11 of the last 14 meetings between the two teams. All 11 wins for the Panthers came under head coach Burt Paddock as he has compiled an 11-4 record against the Saints, including winning the last five contests. The last time Aquinas won in the series was on January 5, 2013 in overtime as they won 84-79.
 
The Last Time Against the Golden Eagles
The last meeting between Davenport and Aquinas was on November 15th in the Panthers second WHAC game of the season. This was also the first WHAC road game for Davenport as they were able to pull away from the Saints in the second half to win 68-56. Davenport and Aquinas were tied 29-29 at halftime, before the Panthers shot 52.9 percent in the second half, while Davenport held Aquinas to just 36.2 percent shooting for the game. Dominez Burnett led the team with 22 points, while Nick Gamble tied his season-high with 13 points in the game and Thomas Drew chipped in with 10 points off the bench.
