Strong Second Period Lifts D1 Hockey over Michigan-Dearborn

Box Score DEARBORN, Mich. – After concluding their final non-conference series of the season last weekend on the road against Lindenwood, the Davenport D1 hockey team returned to GLCHL action as they faced Michigan-Dearborn in Dearborn, Mich., to open up a home-and-home series. The Panthers had three different goal scorers in the 3-1 victory over the Wolverines. Both team will close out the weekend series in Grand Rapids on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. puck drop at Patterson Ice Center.
 
In the first period, both teams were trying to find their groove as neither team was able to find the back of the net to keep the game scoreless going into the second period. The second stanza seen all the scoring as Everett Thompson got the scoring started off a feed from Tyler Ploeg and Cody Mathieu.
 
The Panthers power play was able to pick up the second goal of the game for Davenport, as Andrew Frank found the back of the net as Luke McCarthy and Cody Walsh grabbed the assists on the goal. Jordan Simmonds scored his team leading 16th goal on the season, while Chris Eckler grabbed is 19th assist, which also leads the team, and Walsh grabbed his second assist on the night. The Wolverines were also able to find the back of the net in the second period as Davenport took a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.
 
Davenport continued to carry their momentum in the third period, but neither team was able to find the back of the net as the Panthers were able to grab the 3-1 win. Davenport out shot Michigan-Dearborn 36-27, as Clayton Brown picked up the win making 26 saves.
 
After the game head coach Phil Sweeney talked about game one of the weekend series, "We started a little slow, but we picked it up in the second period and played really well in the third period. Our neutral zone play struggled tonight, but we will fix that for Saturday, as it will be a great atmosphere as both team will be playing playoff style hockey."
 
Davenport and Michigan-Dearborn will finish up the home-and-home weekend series on Saturday evening at the Patterson Ice Center.
