Box Score LEWISTON, N.Y. - The Davenport men's Division I hockey team was staring down a 5-1 deficit going into the third period at Niagara University on Friday night. What happened next was arguably the greatest comeback in the history of the program. The Panthers stormed back for five goals in the final period for a remarkable 6-5 win over the Purple Eagles.
Travis White scored for DU at 14:49 of the first period from
Matt Ogden and
Alex Hulford as the Panthers were down 2-1 after the first.
Niagara scored three times in the second period and looked to be in complete control. The Panthers connected at 3:09 of the third as
Jordan Simmonds scored unassisted.
Walker Aurand scored 1:51 later to cut the deficit to 5-3 for his first collegiate goal from
Chris Eckler and
Winston Hofer. White notched a power play goal from
Cameron Dimmitt and Hulford at 7:27 to pull the team within a goal. Niagara continued to unravel and Davenport tied the game at 5-5 with 5:52 left as Hulford scored with assists from Ogden and
Luke McCarthy. The comeback was complete with 4:12 to go as Hulford finished a four-point night with the game-winning goal unassisted.
The Panthers finished 1-for-2 on the power play while Niagara was 3-for-8. The total shots were in favor of DU 41-28 and
Matt Kaludis stopped 14 shots.
Clayton Brown relieved Kaludis and made nine saves.
