Men's Soccer Wins WHAC Championship after 2-0 Win over Lawrence Tech

It is the third WHAC championship for Davenport (2010, 2013)

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team won its third Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship on Saturday night with a 2-0 win over Lawrence Tech. The Panthers (15-1-2, 10-0-1) were riding high after a 2-1 win earlier this week at Northwestern Ohio and before they even kicked off knew they were WHAC champions after UNOH lost 2-1 to Marygrove in the afternoon. DU finished with 31 points in the standings while the Racers had 27. A team earns three points for a win and one point for a tie.

The earlier news might have had the Panthers a little more at ease because they played to a scoreless first half against the Blue Devils (9-8-1, 5-5-1). Davenport and Lawrence Tech played on a very wet turf field at Meyering Field. Aaron Orban made three saves in the first half and did not need to make anymore in the second half. Davenport finished with four shots on goal.

Alex Mendez scored the first goal in the 67th minute for the game-winning goal with an assist from Jake Love. It was Mendez's fifth goal of the season and Love's 11th assist which tied the DU season record. Love added an insurance goal in the 87th minute with an assist from Joan Nievas. It was Love's ninth goal of the year and the third assist for the senior playing in his final regular season match. Kyler Jacobs, Omar Mansah and Bernard Brnada also are graduating for the Panthers.

"The players worked very hard this year and found consistency in their game as the season progressed," said head coach Chris Hughes. "The league is a tough one with several good teams. I am proud of each and every player. Our coaching staff believed in the process and through hard work and dedication helped pave a path to the title. We now look forward to the WHAC Tournament."
