ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The men's Division II hockey team is playing their best towards the end of the calendar year as they have won eight straight including an impressive pair of road victories at Lewis by scores of 10-4 and 10-1. The Flyers had lost just once all season coming into the weekend and are now 17-3 overall and ranked sixth in the ACHA D2 Central Region. The Panthers have surged to 9-6 overall and found a way to put the puck in the net at an alarming rate.
The second period on Friday turned a 2-1 lead by the Panthers into an 8-4 lead.
Trevor Murray and
Tyler Thomas netted first period goals and Alex Carson scored on the power play for Lewis. Lewis took a 3-2 lead in the second period as Nicholas Johnsen (PPG) and John Schwarz propeled LU ahead for the first time in the contest. The Panthers then reeled off two goals by
Jake Otto (PPG) and Murray again to take a 4-3 lead at the 5:26 mark. Scott Schroeder tied the game at 11:27 but Davenport scored the last six goals to put it away.
Donald Sund scored the game-winning goal at 12:45 of the second from
Branden Burton and
Daniel Swink. Zac Bodziak made it a 6-4 lead at 14:03 from
Blake Damerow and
Chris McRae. Swink got into the goal scoring column at 18:11 from Otto and 25 seconds later it was Otto's second of the game from Sund and Swink for an 8-4 lead after 40 minutes.
McRae (4:55) and
Brad Lawson (10:30) added goals in the third period. Davenport shot on net 62 times compared to 27 for the Flyers.
Christian Thompson played all 60 minutes and improved to 8-5 in net with 23 saves.
On Saturday the frustration began to set in for the Flyers as they lost 10-1 and committed 96 penalty minutes. Thomas,
Austin Flores, Lawson and Sund all scored in the first period for a 4-0 lead. The Panthers, ranked eighth in the Central Region, then scored the first three goals in the second for a 7-0 lead. Otto, Burton and Sund all notched power play goals as DU finished 6-for-10 on the day. Brendan Bednarz stopped the bleeding at 10:29 of the second for Lewis.
McRae and Swink scored power play goals in the third period and
Jessee Game scored the team's final goal unassisted at 13:04 of the third. Davenport shot on net 52 times while Lewis had 23. Lewis went 0-for-3 on the power play. Thompson made 16 saves in 40 minutes.
Zac Smith played 20 minutes in net and made six saves for the Panthers.
