FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Panthers began their play in the Cruzin' Classic Friday night in a matchup with the No. 17 team in NAIA Division I John Brown University (Ark.) DU used a solid first half of play to jump out to a 50-29 half time lead. The Panthers carried that momentum to their 10
th straight win as they topped the Golden Eagles by an 84-65 final score.
DU played a balanced first half that saw the Panthers shoot 51.4% from the floor while they forced 12 John Brown turnovers and totaled seven steals.
Mallory Sewell led all scorers at the break with 10 points and
Tiesha Stokes went a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor to total eight points. The Panthers would see their lead extend to 21 points by playing a dominant first half in the paint as they outscored the Golden Eagles 33-8. DU also got out on the fast break to score 10 points and saw their bench outscore John Brown 24-8.
The second half saw DU maintain their double-digit lead over John Brown as they advanced their lead to as many as 22 and did not let the Golden Eagles get any closer than a 13-point margin. The Panthers finished off their overall balanced performance with four players scoring in double figures as the team would go on to shoot 49.3% (33-67) from the floor. The DU defense continued to stifle the Golden Eagles as they would go on to total 11 steals and eight blocks while holding John Brown to shooting just 36.8% from the floor (21-57).
Molly Babbs (5-for-5) and
Tiesha Stokes (6-for-6) would both finish the game perfect from the field as they would finish with 14 and 13 points respectively.
Mallory Sewell finished with a career-high 15 points while
Amanda Merz tied a career-high with 12 points. The Panthers overwhelmed the Golden Eagles on the glass by a 43-26 margin and were led by Babbs who totaled nine boards. DU would total 54 points in the paint and outscore the Golden Eagles 42-15 in points off of the bench.
The Panthers will finish their play in the Cruzin 'Classic tomorrow (Dec. 19) in a matchup with No. 1 Saint Xavier University at 1 p.m. This will be the fourth time in school history that the Panthers take on the top-ranked team in NAIA DII.
